I really enjoy all of the visualization features. One issue, though -- MIDITrail does not have a volume control. I don't like to adjust my main system volume and MIDITrail is extremely loud compared to other apps. I don't know the technical aspects of MIDI playback, but even if the volume was an emulated volume control, it would be very desireable. Thank you! :-)
,,,on a Mac Studio 12.6.1. Crashes consistantly.
Would have rated five stars if music playback could be paused or stopped without leaving our pipe organ droning. During pause or stop, notes that are currently playing all need to be silenced.
After OS X 10.15 QuickTime dropped MIDI support, I basically stopped playing MIDI files until I found this. It plays MIDI -- but the best part is that it not only looks great displaying the score, it actually helps you gain insight into the music. I have used ProTools MIDI GUIs for years and this is really something special.
amazing
Set your file associations to play MIDI files with this, so convenient, and not only does it play the file, but it arranges instruments correctly, and visually separates the tracks in a 3D space. So it is fun to look at and even helps you understand the structur of the song.
This application was amazing! I could visualize my music in 3D! I highly reccommend it :D
errors about unsupported bitmaps on startup
I really loved using this program, but ever since I updated to OS X El Capitan, it just gives me an error whenever I open it, and crashes if I try to load a file. I would really, really appreciate it if this bug was fixed. Until then, sorry, but 1/5.
Gives an error when opened. Crashes every time I try to open a file. Software doesn’t work.
Was excited to find this app, downloaded it, DOES NOT WORK. Crashes on startup EVERYTIME and again if you try to open a MIDI file.
This app doesn’t work at all (tried on MB Pro, El Capitan) - first it emits a message: “Program Error: OGLPrimitive line 327” - later, it simply seg faults
I love this program, but there is a problem. After re-installing this program, I opened it up, but then there was an error message, and then after making an attempt to open a midi file, it crashed. NOT ACCEPTABLE!! PLEASE DO AN UPDATE AND BUG FIX IMMEDIATELY!!!!! Using OS X El Capitan (Beta Version).
Application keeps giving me the error “bitmap too large”. Tried both 3D and 2D visualizations. It also crashes frequently when trying to do anything (change configuration, open file).
I was looking for a way to make a video of a keyboard playing my compositions. It took me a while to figure out how to make the keys 3 dimensional (you have to change the settings before you open up any files), and I wish there was a way to turn off the colored note lines but other than that it’s great!
I use it to teach myself piano songs. I can slow it down enough to learn each passage. But the only thing I wish it did was set an AB loop section, and the ability to turn off/on instrument tracks.
i don't see anyway to loop so i can learn a part
I had no technical problems with this app. You just have to actually read the brief manual. I think it is does wonderfully at visualizing MIDI information. It not only can play MIDI files, but if you have a MIDI device capable of sending MIDI IN, and you choose "Start Monitoring" it will create a live visualization of what you are playing. For free even!
I was just looking for a simple app to play midi files on my iMac. It does that without any problem. Everything else is just icing on the cupcake.
a) shows an error that some font cannot be found b) crashes when antialiasing is On
When looking at the images and description, this seems like an innovative and truly amazing program. One that would make visual shows for DJs easier as well as allow an artist to moniter the Midi controlloer they are using. However, I have found that this program doesn't tend to pick up any Midi device used and insists that one is not active. If it weren't free I'd say don't waste your money. Since it is free, I say, don't get your hopes up, you'll probably be dissapointed.
This is a fantastic free app. It's super easy to turn the sound on the first time you use it. Just go to Option> Midi Out> and choose Apple DSL Music Device. That's it. Endless entertainment. Find thousands of free midi files on the web. Just Google your favorite songs with "title midi file", download, then open them with MIDITrail. Also very easy to slow down and speed up tempo while watching and listening. I'm really enjoying this. Cheers :o)
It didn't playany SOUND, my volume was all the way up. Don't get it.
It took me forever to realize that all the options weren't available to select until you close the midi you're currently playing.
Love the interface and all. Very clever. But it won't send to my Kontakt 4 virtual input. Not even an option. If this were added I would be such a happy camper.
Not sure how to use this. anyone help?
This is a visual way of exploring the structure of a midi song, while it's playing. Some suggestions for the developer: Support a fullscreen mode. Piona Roll Rain should leave out the unused instruments. Some kid of auto-camera mode that is looking at where the action is (and transitioning reasonably.)
OK, this is very cool. I'm very visually oriented, and I love the way that you can see the music coming from far off -- notes, measures, MIDI parts, and all. Very creative.
Neat, Complete and Can't be beat! Thank you
Hi, I like this, and am thinking of using it to learn how to play some piano midi files I have. Can you please add a 'slow-motion' option...like listening to the music file in a slower speed? Thanks for considering!
I find this program to be a very interesting and different idea. I also see that i might be able to learn how to play a song using it. the only problem is there is no slow down option (unless i just cant find it). so i am holding one star for no slow down
Though, I can't seem to think of any practical use for this application, it doesn't take away from the fact that its just pure fun to watch.
